Rent Breakdown
How The Math Works
Our algorithm uses a weighted fairness formula to make sure nobody overpays for a smaller room or underpays for luxury amenities.
Proportional Size Split
First, base rent is proportional to the bedroom square footage or meters. A roommate with 60% of total bedroom space takes on a larger share of base rent.
Feature Adjustments
Private bathrooms (+15%), private balconies (+10%), walk-in closets (+5%), and natural light (+5%) add weighted points to a room's value score.
Normalized Balance
All room scores are normalized so that the final individual rent amounts always sum exactly to your total monthly rent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why shouldn't we just split rent equally?
Equal rent splits often lead to roommate arguments when one person gets a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and another gets a tiny box room with a shared bathroom. Weighted splits keep things transparent and fair.
Is this calculator country-agnostic?
Yes! The weighted fairness algorithm uses relative mathematical ratios rather than specific regional tax or rental laws. You can change the currency symbol to Dollars ($), Pounds (£), Euros (€), or any currency of your choice.
